Job Title:  Publications Manager and Editor

This position is responsible for all aspects of the Toledo Museum of Art’s (TMA) program of scholarly publishing working closely with the curatorial team to bring publication projects to fruition, particularly through the lens of the Strategic Objective of Broadening the Narrative of Art History. This position is responsible for the project management of publications and acts as the primarily liaison between TMA and outside publishers. Additionally, this position acts as the main editor for labels and other written interpretation for TMA’s art collection and exhibitions.

  • Leads the Museum effort to identify, define, budget, and schedule new books by preparing proposals with Museum staff, outside scholars, and senior management.
  • Develops, produces, promotes, and arranges the distribution of book projects that present and interpret the art collections for our many audiences.
  • Edits and produces manuscripts by coordinating the various phases of production with author(s), photographer(s), freelance editor(s), proofreader(s), designer(s), printer(s), and co-publisher(s); or by researching and writing publications copy on various topics as appropriate to the Museum’s publication goals.
  • Participates in fund-raising efforts on behalf of the publishing program by working with the Development team.
  • Provides consistent “institutional voice” for the interpretation of the Museum collection as set forth in the Interpretation Plan and through the guidance of the Manager of Gallery Interpretation and Learning. 
  • Assists curators in researching and writing interpretive labels, website collections content, the featured “Art Minute” object of the week, or by editing such materials as provided by curators and Learning and Interpretation staff that is visitor friendly and appealing to many of our audiences.
  • Acts as a visitor advocate at all times. This includes acknowledging visitors and striving to make them feel welcome, comfortable, and eager to return.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
  • Master’s degree in art history, art education, or related field required.
  • 3-5 years’ publications management and/or editorial experience required.
  • Knowledge of the state and national education standards is desirable.
  • Knowledge of best practices in museum interpretation is preferred.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to handle a varied workload, to multi-task, be detail-oriented with outstanding organizational skills and good follow-through.  Must understand the urgency of deadlines and effectively complete time-sensitive tasks.  Must be a self-starter able to identify projects/staff in need of assistance during slow periods.
  • Adaptability - maintaining effectiveness when experiencing major changes in work tasks or the work environment; adjusting effectively to work within new work structures, processes, requirements, or cultures.
  • Decision Making - identifying and understanding issues, problems, and opportunities; comparing data from different sources to draw conclusions; using effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions; taking action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.

  • Initiating Action - taking prompt action to accomplish objectives; taking action to achieve goals beyond what is required; being proactive.
Standard open office work environment shared with co-workers, with related phone, computer and printer noise. The noise level in the work environment is generally that found in an office area and public places. Standard office activity to include on-going verbal and written communication, computer and telephone system usage, ability to handle, move and retrieve objects and to attend meetings throughout the building and campus which may result in occasional exposure to uncomfortable weather conditions. The position may involve occasional evening and weekend work as well as occasional travel.
