Job Description

NREL’s Communications Office has an opening for a Professional IV Editor. The successful candidate will be a key member of the communications team sharing the stories of Energy Systems Integration advancements, as well as independently manage multiple complex editing projects. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional communications and editing skills, use good judgment and established Communications Office procedures, pay strong attention to detail and quality, and maintain good working relationships with clients and colleagues.

The selected candidate will work directly with lab researchers as part of our dedicated communications team that is structured in an agency-like setting and includes project managers, editors, graphic designers, digital specialists, and writers. You’ll edit a variety of deliverables in parallel to meet multiple deadlines for our clients at NREL and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and manage internal processes related to publications, including journal articles and other technical and outreach materials. 

We’re looking for a self-motivated editor with excellent time management and problem-solving skills. You should be familiar with traditional and digital communications, demonstrate attention to detail and quality, and be effective interacting directly with research staff and management and building strong working relationships across NREL’s Communications Office. 

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Editing a wide range of publication materials for the Energy Systems Integration communications team to align with internal style and brand guidelines
  • Serving as primary contact for researchers’ publications (e.g., journal articles, technical reports, web copy, news articles, fact sheets, social media, and other content)
  • Manage internal publication tools and processes to support project leads
  • Demonstrating sound judgment on collaborative approaches to provide clients with the appropriate edit for their project and budget in alignment with office standards and best practices  
  • Contributing editing expertise to Communications Office projects, processes, and best practices, and serving as an expert editing resource for office staff and management.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Writing short-form content (e.g., research highlights and technical talking point summaries)
  • Working closely with teams across NREL and DOE communication offices to secure approvals
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with teams, peers, and clients
  • Informing project managers and team leaders on project status and day-to-day problem-solving   
  • Leading office projects as requested.

About NREL and the Communications Office 

NREL is the only DOE national laboratory dedicated to renewable energy and energy efficiency research. The NREL Communications Office comprises communications experts in a variety of disciplines focused on raising awareness about the lab and DOE programs. This position resides in the Communications Office’s Science and Technology Communications Group, which consists of 12 teams representing NREL’s wide-ranging research areas.



Requirements

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated previous science- or research-related communications content editing experience
  • Exemplary editing and writing skills 
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and quality
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback to client authors
  • Experience adhering to a house style guide, AP style, and/or Chicago style
  • Nimbleness needed to multitask in a fast-paced, agency-like setting
  • Team- and customer-service-oriented mindset
  • Strong project management skills, including leading tasks and adhering to budgets and schedules to meet deadlines
  • Experience coordinating deadline-oriented publications
  • Strategic problem-solving skills
  • A can-do attitude and collaborative work style, with the ability to react positively to rapidly changing circumstances.
